Helical gearbox housings are usually made of dense-grained cast iron. Occasionally, when the application requires it, the housing is also supplied with structural steel. They are durable, corrosion-resistant, and absorb shock and vibration. Helical gears are made of EN 353 case hardened steel and helical gears are made of SAE 8620 case hardened steel. Teeth are generated on a gear hobbing machine. They are then case-carburized, hardened, and tempered. Finally, they are surface ground to tight tolerances. The tooth flanks are ground on a tooth grinding machine. This results in very good efficiency and quiet working conditions. The output shaft is made of alloy steel forgings or bars. The low-speed shaft can be of solid or hollow type. The bearings are mounted on precisely drilled journals and use tapered roller bearings.

Advantages of a Helical Gearbox and How They Work

A helical gearbox is a mechanical machine that consists of parallel shafts and has all-rolling contact. Its basic efficiency ranges from 90% to 99.5 percent. The helical gearbox can be a conventional or modular model. A modular model offers the same benefits as a conventional one, but allows for interchangeable components and the highest possible standard of component integrity. This article will discuss the advantages of modular gearboxes and explain how they work.

A helical gear is technically a spur gear set. The helix angle is usually between 15 and 30 degrees. This is different from the usual 20-degree involute spur gear, which typically has a tooth form of 14-1/2 degrees. The helical gear’s helix angle is also known as the pressure angle, and when two teeth enter the main mesh, a line is formed that touches the other.

There are two types of helical gearboxes: the double-helical and the single-helical. The double-helical gearbox has two helical sections that are close together, separated by a gap. It provides higher tooth-to-face overlap and smoother performance. This type is most commonly used in enclosed gear systems. A single-sided helical gearbox does not have the distance between the helical faces, so it is more suitable for high-frequency, high-shock and vibration cases.

Another benefit of a helical gearbox is noise control. The teeth of this gearbox are arranged at an angle to the gear axis, making it quieter than spur gears. Additionally, this type of gear is more efficient at bearing higher loads. Hence, it is the perfect replacement for a spur gear in many industries. Its smaller size makes it a good option for high-speed industrial applications.

Application

Most reputable suppliers of industrial gearboxes recommend helical gears to work at high load efficiency, of course when we need quiet operation, such as automotive applications.
